Audio choice: why it matters more than you think

The sound you pick sets the mood before anyone reads a word. How to choose audio that fits your niche, your message and your pacing.

Most creators treat audio like an afterthought. They pick whatever trending sound is at the top of the list and call it a day.

Big mistake.

The audio you choose can be the difference between a video that gets 500 views and one that gets 50,000.

Here’s how to actually think about it.

Audio sets the emotional tone

Before someone even processes what your video is about, the audio is already telling them how to feel.

If your audio doesn’t match the emotion you’re trying to convey, the video feels off. People might not consciously notice, but their brain does. And they’ll scroll.

Ask yourself: what emotion am I trying to create?

A lot of this comes down to doing some scrolling. Watch videos similar to the one you want to make and notice the sounds they use to land the same emotions you’re going for.

Sometimes picking the right song is the missing ingredient in making a video go viral.

Here’s where people get confused. Everyone tells you to use trending sounds. And yes, trending sounds can help with discoverability.

But trending sounds aren’t all created equal.

A sound that’s trending in the beauty niche might do nothing for you in the fitness niche.

What you want is audio that’s popular within your specific niche.

Scroll through your niche hashtags. What sounds do you hear over and over in successful videos about apps, tech, productivity or whatever space you’re in?

Those are the sounds that resonate with your audience. Use those.

If a sound is trending globally but you never see it in your niche, it’s probably the wrong pick. Your audience hasn’t connected that sound with your type of content yet.

How to find the right audio

Here’s the process:

  1. Spend 10 to 15 minutes scrolling through your niche hashtags. They tell you far more about your audience than your general For You page.
  2. Save 5 to 10 sounds that keep popping up in high-performing videos.
  3. Pay attention to the vibe of each sound. Is it hype? Chill? Satisfying? Dramatic?
  4. Match the sound to the emotion of your specific video.

If you keep seeing a certain sound in videos that perform well in your space, that’s a green light. Your audience already associates that sound with content like yours.

Sometimes a trending sound is so massive that it works everywhere. Those sounds transcend niches.

If a sound is dominating the For You page across multiple niches, it’s probably safe to use even if it isn’t specific to your space.

Use it strategically, though. Make sure it still fits the emotion and pacing of your video. Don’t force it just because it’s trending.

Original audio can work too

Don’t sleep on original audio, especially if you’re talking in your videos.

A voiceover explaining an app feature is original audio, and it can perform just as well as a trending sound if the content is strong.

The key is making sure your voice has energy and clarity. Monotone voiceovers kill engagement. Speak with intention and emotion.

Background music under your voiceover can help too. It adds texture without overwhelming your message.

Audio and pacing go hand in hand

The tempo and rhythm of your audio should match your cuts and pacing.

If you’re using a high-energy sound with a fast beat, your cuts should match that energy: quick transitions, rapid pacing.

If you’re using something slower and more ambient, you can let shots breathe a bit more.

When your cuts sync with the audio, the video feels more polished and intentional. It’s more satisfying to watch.

Even simple things like cutting on the beat or timing a reveal to a drop in the music can make your video feel far more professional.

Don’t overthink it

The beauty of platforms like TikTok and Instagram is that posting is completely free. Overthinking one post won’t get you far. The real key is to post, evaluate, tweak, then post again. Do that over and over and you’ll start to see progress. Once you find something that’s working, double and triple down on it.

Once you find a format that works, keep repeating it.

Once you find an audio that works, keep using it.

That’s how it works.
