What's most likely to affect your video performance?

Video performance follows a few key levers. The five that matter most on TikTok and Instagram Reels, and the order to fix them in.

Most creators think video performance is random.

It rarely is.

A few key levers matter far more than everything else, and once you understand them, you can stop guessing and start improving on purpose.

Here’s what actually moves the needle on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

1. The first 1 to 3 seconds (your hook)

This is the biggest one.

If people don’t stop scrolling, nothing else matters: the editing, the captions and the hashtags never get a chance.

The algorithm first shows your video to a small group and watches one thing very closely:

Do people stick around past the first few seconds?

If they don’t, the video dies early. If your views are low, assume the hook is the problem first.

2. Watch time (and completion rate)

Once people stop scrolling, the next question is:

Do they keep watching?

TikTok loves videos that:

  • Are watched to completion
  • Get rewatched

This usually means:

  • Shorter, tighter videos
  • Cutting out every unnecessary second
  • Getting to the point faster than feels comfortable

If you ramble, hesitate or over-explain, people leave. And when people leave early, distribution slows down fast.

3. Engagement (especially comments and shares)

Likes are nice. Comments and shares carry far more weight.

Comments and shares tell the algorithm:

“This video is worth pushing to more people.”

That’s why some videos with fewer likes still blow up.

To increase engagement:

  • Ask a simple question
  • Give a controversial (but safe) opinion
  • Tell people exactly what to comment

For example:

  • “Agree or disagree?”
  • “Which one would you choose?”
  • “Comment ‘part 2’ if you want the rest.”

Simple works.

4. Content clarity

This is where a lot of creators get it wrong.

Your video can be shot on a phone in your kitchen. What it has to be is clear.

People should immediately understand:

  • Who the video is for
  • What it’s about
  • Why they should care

If someone has to think for more than a second, they scroll.

Clarity > creativity.

5. Consistency (posting and format)

Consistency builds trust with the algorithm.

In practice, consistency means:

  • Posting regularly
  • Staying within a clear niche
  • Repeating formats that already worked

If a video did well, make another version of it.

Same idea. Slight twist.

That’s how you grow.

Where to start

If you’re struggling with performance, don’t change everything at once.

  1. Start with the hook.
  2. Then tighten the video.
  3. Then work on engagement.

Do that consistently, and the algorithm will meet you halfway.
